COLUMBUS, OHIO - Freshman defender Abby Hassinger scored a goal in the 45th minute of play to get Duke within one goal of No. 15 Ohio State, but the Blue Devils could not overtake the Buckeyes this afternoon in Columbus, falling, 2-1.
"We started off a little sluggish and allowed them to get an early goal," head coach Beth Bozman said. "From there, we took over the game in every area but scoring. We needed to finish and it was pretty disappointing."
It was a frustrating game for the 13th-ranked Blue Devils (9-8, 0-4 ACC), who limited Ohio State to only four shots all day. Duke had 12 shots total, including four on goal, three of which were saved by Buckeye goalie Lindsay Quintiliani. The Blue Devils also held the edge in penalty corners (7-1).
Hassinger was able to capitalize on one penalty corner, tipping the ball into the cage at the 45:45 mark. It was the second goal this year for the newcomer, who has started every game on the backline for the Blue Devils.
Ohio State got on the board first in the sixth minute off a goal from Aisling Coyle. Coyle dove to catch a piece of the ball and it was enough to slip it past junior goalie Samantha Nelson and into the cage. Jena Cacciatore also recorded an assist on the goal.
The Buckeyes struck again in the second half, with Maria Briones goal at the 43:43 mark off Ohio State's lone penalty corner chance. Briones was able to get her stick on the ball and deflect it into the cage. Coyle also was credited with an assist.
Sophomore midfielder Tara Jennings missed today's contest due to an injury. Junior Sarah Schoffstall, sophomore Rhian Jones and freshman Chelsea Amsley played all the minutes in the midfield.
Duke will play its final regular season game on Oct. 31 on Halloween at Virginia. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
