Fencing Finishes Up At Princeton Dual Meet

PRINCETON, N.J. ? Duke freshman Becca Ward went 14-2, classmate Dana Rosen finished 11-7 and men's freshman Dan Cohen went 7-2 to lead the Blue Devil fencing teams at the Princeton Dual Meet Sunday afternoon.

Both the Duke men (6-3) and women (4-8) topped Haverford at the event, with the men's squad winning 19-8 and the women 18-9. The Blue Devil men won all three weapons against Haverford, while the women swept all nine saber bouts. The Duke men went 1-3 on the day while the women finished 1-5.

Duke's women's saber quartet of Ward (32-2), Ashley Donald (20-14), Jessica Hancock (15-13) and Margot Mausner (4-9) went 3-3 on the day with wins over Temple, Haverford and Cornell. Ward and Donald, both freshmen, became the first Blue Devils this season to reach the 20-win plateau.

Rosen (20-13) was the top women's foil at Princeton and one of two Blue Devils (Ward) to reach double-digit wins at the event. Nicole Bloom (15-14) just missed reaching double figures with eight wins in epee action, while Erin Pytel (11-19) went 6-11 and fellow epee Jenny Kim (8-23) turned in a five-win performance.

The men's foil squad (7-2) picked up a 5-4 win against host-team Princeton and an 8-1 rout of Haverford. Cohen's 7-2 record was the four-man group's best outing of the day and improved his team-leading win total to 19-1. Sophomore Dorian Cohen (16-8) broke even at 6-6, while his brother Eliot Cohen (13-4) did the same at 4-4. Freshman foil Nikola Lahcanski (12-7) also got in on the action and finished 4-3.

Senior Loki Stewart (17-7) picked up five wins to lead the saber team (5-4) and got two of those in the squad's 5-4 victory over Haverford. David Eitel (9-9) followed with four wins, and senior captain Peter Truszkowski (17-7) won two bouts.

The men's epee squad (6-3) got a pair of five-win outings from freshmen Jonathan Parker (15-10) and Tristan Jones (15-9). That duo contributed to the group's 6-3 victory over Haverford by going 4-2 in the match.

Up next for the Blue Devils is a trip to Cambridge, Mass., for the MIT Dual Meet on Sunday, Feb. 1. Duke will then come back home to host the Duke Dual Meet on Feb. 6-7 in Card Gym on the West Campus of Duke University.
