CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? The third-ranked Duke women's golf team opened the 2008-09 campaign on Sunday at the NCAA Fall Preview in seventh place with rounds of 300 and 297 for a total of 597, which was being played at the 6,270-yard, par 72 Caves Valley Golf Course in Owings Mills, Md.
Leading the Duke charge was freshman Mina Harigae, who was playing in her first collegiate tournament. Harigae, who is from Monterey, Calif., opened with a 74 in the morning round and then posted a 69 in the afternoon. The 2007 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links champion is tied for fourth with a total of 143.
In the morning round, Harigae totaled two birdies, four bogies and 13 pars for a 74. She got hot in the afternoon with four birdies over her first 13 holes to move to four-under-par. Harigae had bogies on two straight holes before closing with a birdie and two pars to finish with a three-under-par ledger.
In the team standings, Georgia jumped out to a four-shot lead by shooting a 36-hole total of 579 on Sunday. Virginia (583) was second followed by Arizona State (586), Auburn (589), Southern California (595), Alabama (596), Duke (597), Oklahoma State (599), Wake Forest (609), Texas A&M (612) and Denver (612) rounded out the top 10 teams.
Opening the tournament with a 36-hole total of six-under-par, 138, was Virginia's Jennie Arseneault to take the individual lead. Auburn's Candace Schepperle is second (139).
Fellow senior Jennie Lee opened the morning round in tied for fifth with an one-under-par, 71, and in the afternoon turned in a 77 to finish tied for 19th after the first day. Lee, a product of Henderson, Nev., owns a 36-hole total of 148. In her morning round, Lee had a bogey to kick off her day before posting two pars, an eagle and a birdie to move to two-under-par. She closed the day with one birdie, one bogey, one double-bogey and seven pars.
The reigning three-time National Player of the Year Amanda Blumenherst struggled in her opening round with a five-over-par, 77, but rebounded in the afternoon with an even-par, 72. She enters the final round tied for 23rd with a 149. Blumenherst, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., owns a streak of 14 straight top five finishes she looks to continue on Monday. In the morning round, Blumenherst didn't collect a birdie, while notching three bogeys and one double-bogey. She bounced back during the second 18 holes to fire three birdies, three bogeys and 13 pars.
Junior Alison Whitaker struggled to open the season with rounds of 78 and 79, which ranked tied for 50th with a 147. Making her fifth appearance of her career, junior Yu Young Lee had rounds of 82 and 85 for a tied for 70th listing.
Duke will tee off beginning at 8:00 a.m., on Monday in the final round along with Oklahoma State and Wake Forest.
