IOWA CITY, Iowa ? Susan Ferger's second goal of the afternoon came with just eight minutes left in the game to propel the No. 12 Duke field hockey team to a come-from-behind road win Sunday, as the Blue Devils defeated fifth-ranked Iowa 2-1 at Grant Field.
Iowa had gone up 1-0 and led at the half after a goal by Caitlin McCurdy 23 minutes in. Duke tied it up on Ferger's first score of the afternoon, as she converted in the 41st minute off a rebound.
That set the stage for the sophomore's late heroics as she sent home the game-winner at the 61:55 mark. Ferger deflected the initial shot by senior Ashley Pultorak into the back of the cage to put Duke up for the first time on the afternoon.
The Duke defense was able to hold off the Hawkeyes for the remainder of the game to secure the 2-1 road victory. The win was third in a row for the Blue Devils, who improved to 3-1. Iowa dropped to 2-2 with the loss.
“We have been getting better every game and today it all came together,” said head coach Beth Bozman. “We competed for 70 minutes and when we do that we are a pretty special and talented team.”
“This was a collective team effort and I am really proud of our team.”
The Hawkeyes had previously beaten No. 1 North Carolina, 3-2, on Aug. 31.
Samantha Nelson made three saves in goal for Duke. The Blue Devils trailed Iowa in the shot column by a count of 8-5, while the squads each took three penalty corners.
Duke improved to 4-2 all-time against Iowa, avenging a 2-0 loss to the Hawkeyes in 2007.
Ferger returns from the weekend road trip with three goals, her first coming in yesterday's 3-1 win over American.
The Blue Devils will open up ACC play next Saturday, Sept. 13, when they travel to take on No. 3 Wake Forest on the road in Winston-Salem. Duke hosts its first home game of the 2008 season next Sunday, Sept. 14, at 1 p.m. at Williams Field, taking on Drexel.
