Durham, N.C. ? The Duke men's lacrosse and men's tennis teams were honored Thursday by the Atlantic Coast Conference with the annual ACC Spring Sportsmanship Award for their respective sports.
The conference presents sportsmanship awards for each of its 25 sponsored sports. The concept of these awards was created by the ACC Student Athlete Advisory Committee in an effort to recognize teams who earned the utmost regard from their peers during competition. Teams receiving the awards have conducted themselves with a high degree of character and good sportsmanship, as determined by a vote of the league's players and coaches.
The men's lacrosse team compiled an overall record of 18-2 (3-0 ACC) in 2008, as the Blue Devils claimed their fifth ACC Tournament championship and advanced to the national semifinals for the third time in four seasons. The 18 victories set an NCAA single-season record, besting the previous standard of 17 wins.
The 2007-08 Duke men's tennis team concluded the season with an 11-14 record. The Blue Devils were selected to the NCAA Tournament for the 17th consecutive season and advanced to the second round for the 16th straight year after claiming an opening round 4-2 victory over No. 23 Arizona State. Duke ended the year ranked No. 39 in the final ITA team rankings.
Three Duke teams received the ACC Sportsmanship award in 2007-08 as men's lacrosse and men's tennis joined women's soccer as recipients of the award.
