DURHAM, N.C. ? GoDuke.com recently sat down with women's pole vaulter Leslie Voorhees for her senior profile. Voorhees, a native of Portland, Ore., discusses her plans for after graduation, her dream job, why she chose Duke, plus much more.
GoDuke.com: What do you have in your iPod before a meet?
Leslie Voorhees: I actually love rap music ? it pumps me up more than anything.
GD: What is your favorite movie?
LV: I love any movie that makes me cry or laugh really hard, which is pretty easy.
GD: What's the last non-school related book you read?
LV: I read I Am Charlotte Simmons, and even though it portrays Duke pretty poorly, I really enjoyed it. It was one of those books that I just sat down and read the whole thing in one day.
GD: What's your favorite food?
LV: Anyone that is friends with me knows it's chocolate chip cookies. I have at least one or two every day.
GD: What are you planning on doing after graduation?
LV: I'm moving back to Oregon and doing Engineering in the Global Footwear Department at NIKE!
GD: What would your dream job be?
LV: I'm doing it ? I've wanted to work at NIKE for my whole life! But hopefully I can move up to someday be an executive there.
GD: Think 10 years down the road, what will you be doing?
LV: Hopefully married and settled down in Portland, Ore., with lots of kids!
GD: What's your favorite part of practice and why?
LV: Nothing beats pole vaulting on a sunny day at the track with the whole team practicing at the same time.
GD: Where is your secret spot to study?
LV: Well, it's no secret that CIEMAS is a hot study-spot for engineers, so I go there often. It's nice because it's not as quiet as the library so my study-buddies and I can still get away with talking and laughing.
GD: Being a few years removed from high school, what pops into your head when you think back to your high school career?
LV: Jeez, college is so much cooler than high school. Four years ago I couldn't believe anything could be better than high school, and now that I'm graduating, I can't believe anything could be better than college. Hopefully life will just keep getting better!
GD: What's your favorite sport, other than your own, to watch on TV?
LV: Definitely basketball. I love watching Duke play, I love March Madness and I'm becoming a bigger fan of the NBA now that the Trail Blazers are getting better.
GD: What is your advice to this year's freshmen on your team?
LV: It's so clich? but enjoy every second of college, it goes by so quickly!
GD: What concert do you most want to attend that you never have?
LV: Elton John. My dad got me started on his music when I was really young and I've always loved him as a musician and entertainer.
GD: Why did you choose to attend Duke?
LV: It had everything I was looking for in a school: a beautiful campus, interesting people, top-tier academics and great traditions in athletics.
GD: What do you do in your free time?
LV: At school, my free time is pretty much devoted to homework, practice, hanging out with friends and my student organizations, like Alpha Delta Pi, Engineering Student Government and American Society for Mechanical Engineers.
