CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Matt Danowski earned his third ACC Player of the Year honor and Mike Manley was tabbed the conference Rookie of the Year, announced on Thursday evening at the 2008 ACC Lacrosse Championship banquet in Charlottesville, Va. Danowski was joined by Zack Greer, Max Quinzani and Tony McDevitt on the 2008 All-ACC Team.
Danowski, Greer and Quinzani become just the second attack unit in league history to have all three members garner All-ACC honors, joining Virginia's group of Doug Knight, Michael Watson and Tim Whiteley who received all-conference accolades in 1996. The 2008 Blue Devil trio is the top point-producing combination in the country, as the attackmen have combined to produce 184 points this season.
Danowski is the first three-time Player of the Year award winner in league history and is Duke's third selection for the award for a total of five overall honors. He combines with Greer to become the fifth and sixth three-time All-ACC picks in Duke history, joining Josh Dennis (1988-89-90), Matt Oglesby (1993-94-95, 1995 ACC POTY), Tyler Hardy (1995-96-97) and Kevin Cassese (2001-02-03, 2001 ACC POTY).
“Obviously it is a great honor to receive this award,” Danowski said. “We play in the best conference in the country, and there are plenty of other players that are deserving of this honor.”
Danowski is Duke's third league player of the year selection of all-time joining Ogelsby (1995) and Cassese (2001).
The reigning Tewaaraton Trophy winner, Danowski currently leads the nation in total points (70) and assists (41). With 326 career points, the Farmingdale, N.Y., native is the ACC's all-time scoring leader and sits in second place on the NCAA all-time scoring chart behind Joe Vasta (343 points for Air Force from 1983-86).
Greer ranks second nationally in scoring with 64 total points and also ranks No. 2 in goals with 43 on the year. With 184 career goals, the Whitby, Ontario, Canada, native ranks first on Duke's all-time list, second in ACC history and tied for fifth on the NCAA's career chart.
Quinzani has netted a nation-leading 45 goals and has scored three or more goals in nine of his 13 contests this season. The Duxbury, Mass., native produced a career-high seven goals and dished out one assist in Duke's 19-9 win over Virginia on March 12, a victory that gave the Blue Devils the top seed for the ACC Tournament for the third time in four seasons.
Manley is Duke's fourth Rookie of the Year selection, joining Danowski (2004), Greer (2005) and Scott Diggs (1996). The Keuka Park, N.Y., native has started 13 games at close defense for Duke in 2008 and has helped the Blue Devils allow just 6.85 goals per game. Manley has 22 ground balls to his credit and tallied his first career goal and assist in the Blue Devils' 15-7 win over then-No. 3 Maryland on March 1.
McDevitt's All-ACC citation in 2008 is the second of his career, as he received the conference nod previously in 2005. A native of Philadelphia, Pa., McDevitt has picked up 39 ground balls this season and contributed one goal in Duke's 21-8 victory at Loyola on March 8.
Duke had a league-high four selections to this year's All-ACC squad, while Virginia had three picks (Ben Rubeor - Attack, Dan Glading - Attack, Brian Carroll - Midfield) and Maryland (Jeff Reynolds - Midfield, Joe Cinosky - Defense) and North Carolina (Ben Hunt - Midfield, Grant Zimmerman - Goalie) had two selections apiece. Maryland's Dave Cottle was named ACC Coach of the Year.
As the top seed for the 2008 ACC Men's Lacrosse Championship, Duke will face-off against fourth-seeded North Carolina on Friday at 5 p.m. at Virginia's Klockner Stadium. In other semifinal action, second-seeded Maryland will take on third-seeded Virginia at 7:30 p.m. The championship game will take place on Sunday, April 27 at 3:30 p.m.
