Gainesville, Fla. -- Senior Michael Schachner shot back-to-back rounds of 68 on Saturday and is tied for sixth overall heading into the final round of the SunTrust Gator Invitational. As a team, the Blue Devils struggled in first and second round action at the par-70, 6,701-yard Mark Bostick Course at the University of Florida.
Duke was hampered by the loss of junior Clark Klaasen, who was unable to play on Saturday because of a neck injury. The Blue Devils enter tomorrow's final round tied for 11th after shooting 289-281=570 (+10) on Saturday. Host Florida is in the lead at 18-under with Florida State 12 shots back. UAB (-4), Mississippi (+1) and LSU (+2) round out the top five.
LSU's Andrew Loupe leads the event at seven-under (133), while Florida State's Jonas Blixt is just one shot back. Florida's Billy Horschel and Bank Vongvanij along with Zach Sucher of UAB are two shots back and tied for third overall. Schachner is one of four players three shots off the pace at four-under.
Schachner opened the day slowly suffering two bogeys on his opening six holes before catching fire after the turn. The Libertyville, Ill., native birdied No. 10, No. 11 and No. 12 and following a par on No. 13 tacked on two more birdies to move to three-under with four holes remaining. He finished par-bogey-par-par for an opening round 68. In the afternoon round, Schachner played bogey-free golf and finished with 16 pars and a pair of birdies for a second round of 68.
Freshman Matthew Pierce shot 70-73=143 (+3) on Saturday and is tied for 36th overall. He had five birdies on the day but also suffered eight bogeys, including five in the second round.
Sophomore Adam Long struggled in the opening round en route to a six-over 76, but responded with a two-under 68 in the afternoon session. Long is currently tied for 41st overall. The St. Louis, Mo., native had just one birdie in the opening round before carding four birdies and an eagle in round two.
Freshman Wes Roach shot 75-72=147 (+7) and is tied for 57th overall. He closed the day with one birdie and a team-high 28 pars.
The Blue Devils tee of in final round action on Sunday beginning at 9:03 on No. 10. Duke is paired with North Florida and Georgia Southern for the third round. Florida has won the event each of the past four years and 21 times overall in 31 years of the tournament.
