DURHAM, N.C. ? Michael Seander of the Duke baseball team was selected to the Preseason Stopper Of The Year award list, as announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
Seander, a 6-2 right-handed sophomore for the Blue Devils, is one of just two ACC pitchers among the 40 student-athletes named in the list, which honors the top relief pitcher in Division I baseball. Seander also appeared on the midseason list as a freshman in 2007.
Last season, Seander led Duke with a 1.61 ERA and nine saves through a team-high 28 appearances, all of which were out of the bullpen. Through 50.1 innings pitched, the Pawtucket, R.I., native struck out 46 hitters while walking 12 and holding opposing hitters to a .229 batting average. He gave up just nine earned runs and two home runs to 203 batters faced and was just as successful against ACC competition, posting a 1.71 ERA in conference play.
The Blue Devils open the 2008 season this Friday, Feb. 22, with a four-game homestand against Iona at Jack Coombs Field. Duke will open with a single meeting against the Gaels at 3 p.m. on Friday, followed by a noon double header on Saturday and the series finale on Sunday at noon.
