SAN DIEGO, Calif., and FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Freshman Emily Schwitzer placed fifth at the USATF Junior Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning in San Diego, Calif., earning her a bid to the IAAF World Cross Country Championships next month. Meanwhile, the Duke Indoor Track and Field team finished up its weekend at the Tyson Invitational on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark. At the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas, freshman Devotia Moore and the women's distance medley relay team qualified for the postseason. Women's: Schwitzer ran the 6,000k U.S. Junior XC race in 21:34, and by placing in the top six earned a spot at the 6k World Championships in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Saturday, March 30. She became the fourth Blue Devil to qualify for the U.S. team for the World Cross Country meet. Sheela Agrawal in 2000, Clara Horowitz in 2003 and Maddie McKeever in 2006 were the previous three. Horowitz was the U.S. Junior Champion when she competed.
Moore earned the first ECAC bid of her young career on Saturday afternoon in Fayettevile, running the 800m in 2:12.84. That time placed her ninth at the meet.
The last event for the Blue Devils at the Tyson Invite was a good one, as the women's distance medley team finished sixth in a time of 12:02.85. It was the second Duke DMR squad to qualify for the ECAC's this season.
The Duke Indoor Track and Field Team will next compete on Feb. 22 and 23 at the Virginia Tech Elite in Blacksburg, Va.
