DURHAM, N.C. ? Saturday afternoon in the Hall of Honor both the men's and women's lacrosse team adopted a child who has been diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor. Both teams and coaching staffs were on hand to attend the formal adoption of the two brain tumor patients.
The men's team adopted Cameron Jackson, 7, and the women's team adopted Iolani “Yuki” Kapule, 9, through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. Both children were treated at Duke University Hospital.
The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation was inspired by 14-year-old Jaclyn Murphy, who was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma in March 2004 at age 11.The program organized by her parents matches a child with a college or high school sports team based on geographic location.
Denis Murphy, Jaclyn's father and the founder of the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, spoke during the ceremony about how important this process can be for the children involved. John Danowski and Kerstin Kimel reached out to Murphy to allow Duke to become involved in the foundation.
“It means a lot, believe it or not,” Murphy said. “It means a lot to the parents. It is not a short term, this is not a photo opportunity, this is a long-term commitment. Yuki has 30 plus new big sisters and Cameron's got 30 plus new big brothers.”
“Love, support and friendship is what the program is about.”
Cameron, his dad Ernest and his mom LeAnn have been traveling back and forth from their home in Apex, N.C., during Cameron's treatment at the hospital. Cameron finished up his treatment in September and is looking forward to begin school again.
Yuki finished her final treatment today, which had been going on since May. Her father, Doug, was stationed at Fort Bragg in Iraq before returning home in May as he and his wife, Amanda, helped their daughter get through the treatment. Yuki also has two brothers, Jonathan and Dougie.
Each team presented their new adopted teammate with a gift. Cameron received a Hot Wheels Race Track and Yuki received a High School Musical 3 board game, while both received Duke Lacrosse apparel.
The foundation helps to give recovering patients a large support system to bond around during the difficult times. The adopted children become the guest of honor at games and receive supportive text messages, emails and phone calls from the teams. Each child that is ?adopted' helps to spread knowledge and understanding for pediatric brain tumors.
Through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, 70 children have been adopted by 18 different sports teams. Over 200 teams are currently on a waiting list to adopt a child.
