DURAHM, N.C.?Lacrosse Magazine tabbed the Duke University men's lacrosse team eighth in its Division I men's preseason poll released on Dec. 22. The Blue Devils kick off the 2009 season on Feb. 14 versus Bucknell, who came in at No. 20.
Duke returns in 2009 after putting together advancing to the national semifinals and posting an 18-2 record a year ago. Ranked third in the final poll, the Blue Devils captured their second consecutive ACC regular season and tournament titles under the direction of head coach John Danowski.
In the previous two seasons, Duke owns two regular season and two ACC tournament titles, two appearances in the NCAA Semifinals and one showing in the NCAA Tournament title tilt.
Danowski welcomes back a talented corps, including six players who recently were selected as preseason All-Americas. Seniors Ned Crotty, Sam Payton, and Brad Ross will captain the squad.
Virginia tops the poll, while Syracuse and Maryland round out the top three. Johns Hopkins and North Carolina come in a No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, with Cornell and Notre Dame taking to six and seven spots in front of Duke. The Blue Devils have eight teams ranked in the top 20 on their 2009 schedule.
