DURHAM, N.C.?Duke University senior midfielder Ned Crotty headlines the list of six Blue Devils selected to the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook 2009 Division I Preseason All-American teams. Crotty earned first team honors, while five others are spread across the second, third and honorable mention squads.
Junior attackman Max Quinzani and senior faceoff specialist Sam Payton both garnered second team recognition, while junior defenseman Parker McKee grabbed a spot on the third team. Senior midfielder Brad Ross and sophomore defender Mike Manley were voted to the honorable mention squad. The ACC had a total of 25 players represented on the list.
“It's nice to have guys recognized in the offseason, but everyone here knows that individual honors take a back seat to the overall team's success,” head coach John Danowski said. “It's a great learning and teaching opportunity for everyone involved.”
Crotty enters the 2009 season after finishing fourth on the team in scoring with 17 goals and 18 assists for 35 points and capturing second-team All-American accolades. He started 19 games at attack, tallying at least one point in 14 games. Registering 10 multiple point contests, Crotty handed out four helpers in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal win against Ohio State and had two goals and two assists in the ACC Tournament Championship game versus Virginia.
A third team USILA All-America selection in 2008, Quinzani was third on the team in scoring with 61 goals and eight assists for 69 points. He tallied at least one goal in all 19 games he played and had 17 games with at least two goals. The native of Duxbury, Mass., tallied a career-high six goals in the Blue Devils' win over ACC rival North Carolina and had five goals and an assist in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal victory over Ohio State. In two seasons he has 85 goals and 12 assists for 97 points.
Payton anchored the faceoff duties for the Blue Devils in 2008. He went 175-120 in restarts for a .593 win percentage. He ranked second on the team in ground balls with 82 and earned ACC Player of the Week honors on March 4. Payton won a season-best 14 restarts against Maryland and again versus Dartmouth. He also picked up a season-high 12 ground balls against the Big Green.
McKee and Manley helped anchor the Blue Devil defense that allowed just 7.30 goals per game and ranked eighth in the nation. McKee started 19 games for Duke and picked up 72 ground balls. Voted to the ACC All-Tournament team, he corralled a combined 14 ground balls in the two tournament contests, including nine in the semifinal win over North Carolina. McKee tallied a goal in the regular season win over Johns Hopkins.
The ACC Rookie of the Year, Manley started 18 games for the Blue Devils in his freshman season. He scored his first career goal and assist in Duke's win over Maryland and finished the year with 23 ground balls.
Ross enters this year after finishing with 25 goals and eight assists as a junior. The native of Darnestown, Md., started 19 games for the Blue Devils in 2008 and has 39 starts for his career. He matched his career-high three goals four times, including iscoring four points (3-1) in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal win over Ohio State. He registered at least one point in 15 games and had nine multiple point outings. Ross twice notched a career-best four points in 2008.
The Blue Devils kick off the season on Feb. 14, hosting Bucknell University at 12 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium.
