Friday night's game marks the 73rd meeting of the in-state rivals. Duke holds a demanding 48-19-5 lead in the series and has won the past three contests and 11 of the previous 12 matches. The Wolfpack's last win in Durham was a 2-1 victory in 1995.
The Blue Devils head into the contest on a five-match unbeaten streak. They are 10-5-2 overall, 3-2-2 in conference play and most recently dropped Northern Illinois 3-1. Duke has the potential to be as high as the No. 3 seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament. Grella headlines the offense with 12 goals and seven assists for a league-leading 31 points. Sophomore Cole Grossman has added 11 points on four goals and three assists.
Duke's defense has been outstanding of late, allowing just one goal in the past five games. Sacrificing just five goals in the previous 10 contests, the Blue Devils have nine shutouts on the season. Barnes, Castaneda, and Fitzgerald all have been important leaders for the Duke defense. In goal, Fitzgerald is 8-5-2 with a 0.73 goals against average and .817 save percentage. Rookie Jan Trnka-Amrhein earned the previous two starts and sports a 1.16 goals against average and .769 save percentage.
N.C. State is 7-8-1 overall and 2-5-0 in ACC action for eighth place. The Wolfpack most recently defeated conference foe Virginia Tech. Alan Sanchez and Ronnie Bouemboue pace the attack with 22 and 21 points, respectively. Bouemboue has a team-high nine goals, while Sanchez leads the squad with six assists. In goal, Christopher Widman sees the majority of minutes and has a 1.52 goals against average and a .714 save percentage. N.C. State is 1-2 overall at opponents' home fields this season and 1-4 overall on the road.
