DURHAM, N.C.?Duke University men's lacrosse head coach John Danowski recently was selected by US Lacrosse to present at the 2009 US Lacrosse Convention. The convention, presented by adidas, runs from Jan. 16-18 in Baltimore, Md.
Danowski is one of over 140 presenters, including officials, coaches, and players, will speak at the National Convention. Highlighting the list of speakers is Baltimore sports icon Cal Ripken, Jr., who will present the keynote address on Friday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Convention Center.
The third-year Blue Devil head coach enters the 2009 season after helping Duke to two of its finest lacrosse seasons in school history. In just two seasons in Durham, Danowski lays claim to a 35-5 record, two ACC regular season and tournament titles, and two appearances in the national semifinals and the title tilt once.
In 2008, he guided the team to an 18-2 overall record, the ACC regular season and tournament championships and the squad's second consecutive appearance in the national semifinals. He mentored nine All-Americas, including three first-team honorees, the USILA Player of the Year as well as the USILA's picks for attackman and defenseman of the year.
The Blue Devils achieved an equal amount of success in the classroom under Danowski's watch as 15 players earned a spot on the ACC All-Academic Team and Max Quinzani collected ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American honors. Duke also garnered the ACC Sportsmanship award during the 2008 season.
With an overall coaching ledger of 254-144 (.638), Danowski is one of just eight active head coaches in NCAA Division I men's lacrosse to reach the 200-win plateau. Prior to his arrival at Duke, he spent 21 campaigns (1986-06) at Hofstra, compiling an overall record of 192-123 (.609) with eight conference championships, eight NCAA Tournament bids and 17 final national rankings among the top 20 teams in the nation.
The US Lacrosse National Convention provides the sport's largest educational opportunity, with over 5,000 coaches, officials, program administrators and vendors in attendance each year. For the fifth year in a row the convention will feature a “live field” area, sponsored by Warrior and Brine, to supplement classroom clinics for coaches and officials. Clinics are offered for all levels of coaches and officials, ranging from youth play up through college-aged players.
