STANFORD, Calif. ? Led by a final round four-under-par, 67, by senior Jennie Lee, the Duke women's golf team came back to finish fifth at the Stanford Intercollegiate on Sunday, which was being played at the par 71 Stanford Golf Club in Palo Alto, Calif.
As a team, the Blue Devils turned in a one-over-par, 285, which was the third-best round of the day and Duke's best round of the week. Duke posted 15 birdies on the day and came back from being in ninth place after day one. Overall, the Blue Devils finished with a three-day total of 861 with rounds of 285, 291 and 285.
“I think overall we can take a lot of positive things out of this week,” said Duke Assistant Coach Jan Dowling. “Obviously, the round today was pretty good and the course played a lot harder, which played into our hands. Jennie's [Lee] 67 was awesome, Alison [Whitaker] came back really well and the whole team stepped up. We can take a lot of good things out of this and move on to two weeks from now at the match play.”
Taking home the team title was UCLA with a 54-hole total of 844, while Southern California (847), Stanford (857), Oklahoma State (859), Duke (861), Vanderbilt (865), Arizona (866), California (872), Arkansas (872), Pepperdine (875) and Texas (875) rounded out the top 11 teams.
Lizette Salas from Southern California finished the tournament with a 206 to claim the individual title. Oklahoma State's Caroline Masson (208) was second and Southern California's Belen Mozo finished third (209).
Lee, who had a solid tournament for the Blue Devils, finished the weekend tied for fifth with a 211, after carding a four-under-par, 67, on Sunday. The only blemish on Lee's final round scorecard was a bogey on the 155-yard, par three 17th. A product of Henderson, Nev., Lee registered five birdies on No. 2, No. 7, No. 12, No. 15 and No. 16 as she hit 16 greens, 10 fairways and had 30 putts on the morning.
“I had a really good day,” said Lee. “I started off with a birdie on No. 2 so that was a really good start for me. I hit a lot of greens on the front nine and kept hitting the ball really well the entire round.”
A two-time All-America, Lee collected a key 10-foot par putt on No. 13 after hitting her tee shot in the fairway bunker and coming up very short in her approach shot. Lee birdied three of the four par fives in the round. Her 54-hole total of 211 was her best finish of the season.
Harigae, who is from 90 minutes away in Monterey, Calif., also tied for fifth with a 211, which was also a career best. She closed the weekend with a one-under-par, 70, that included four birdies -- two on each side. Harigae played a very nice five-iron on the 160-yard, par three fifth hole as she stuck it within a foot for birdie. She also played a solid second shot on the par five seventh hole to just short of the green and chipped up to within a foot for birdie.
Junior Alison Whitaker turned in her best round of the weekend as she posted a one-over-par, 72, on Sunday. A native of Melbourne, Australia, Whitaker opened the day with four straight pars before suffering a double-bogey on the fifth hole. She rebounded with a birdie on the par five seventh hole as she sank a 20-foot putt. Whitaker made the turn with a two-over-par, 37, and suffered her second straight bogey on the tough, 10th hole. Over the final eight holes, Whitaker played two-under-par with birdies on No. 15 and No. 18. She finished the tournament tied for 53rd with a 222.
Amanda Blumenherst struggled for most of the day finishing with a five-over-par, 76. She closed the tournament with a 219, which was tied for 32nd. A product of Scottsdale, Ariz., Blumenherst couldn't get her putting rolling on Sunday as she suffered four bogeys, one double-bogey, one birdie and three pars to make the turn at five-over-par, 40. On the back, she notched six straight pars before posting a birdie on the 490-yard, par five 16th, a bogey on No. 17 and a par on the 18th.
Sophomore Kim Donovan closed the weekend with a five-over-par, 76, to finish tied for 60th with a 224. Donovan, who is from Hopkinton, Mass., totaled one birdie on the day, which came on the par five seventh hole as she registered a chip to within a few inches, after great tee and approach shots.
Playing as an individual, junior Yu Young Lee finished tied for 38th with a 220. On Sunday, Lee fired a four-over-par, 75, as she notched two birdies -- both on the front nine. Her 54-hole total of 220 was a career best.
Duke will next play in the NGCA National Match Play Championship from No. 2-4 in Kissimmee, Fla.
