KISSIMMEE, Fla. ? Freshman Mina Harigae fired consecutive rounds of 69 on Sunday to lead the Duke women's golf team to a tied for fourth place finish in the 36-hole qualifying at the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Match Play Championship, which is being played at the Reunion Resort in Kissimmee, Fla.
Harigae, who owns a 36-hole total of 138, was second individually behind UCLA's Stephanie Kono (132) in the individual standings. A product of Monterey, Calif., Harigae collected four birdies in each round with only one bogey.
In the team standings, Duke was tied for fourth with rounds of 288 and 294 for a total of 582. UCLA earned the No. 1 seed in the match play with a total of 567, while Virginia (576), Alabama (579), Southern California (582), Duke (582), Auburn (585), Denver (588), Michigan State (590), Kent State (591) and Georgia (591) rounded out the top 11 teams.
The Blue Devils received the fifth seed in the match play due to a tiebreaking procedure and will take on fourth-seeded Southern California on Monday in the first round. The winner will advance to play the winner of the top-seeded UCLA versus Michigan State contest.
Duke junior Alison Whitaker turned in a season-best four-under-par, 68, in the first round on Sunday morning but struggled with a 77 in the afternoon. She was tied for 16th with a 145. In the first round, Whitaker was one-over-par through four holes but played the final 14 holes at five-under-par to finish with a 68. She notched five birdies in the first round.
Senior Amanda Blumenherst posted rounds of 74 and 73 for a total of 147, which was tied for 24th. A native of Scottsdale, Ariz., Blumenherst notched five birdies in the two rounds but double-bogeys on No. 16 and No. 11 in rounds one and two, respectively, hurt her final score.
Junior Yu Young Lee, who is from Orlando, Fla., had rounds of 77 and 79. Her total of 156 was 65th, individually. Sophomore Kim Donovan was tied for 70th with a 158 after turning in rounds of 83 and 75.
The Blue Devils were without two-time All-America senior Jennie Lee as she will be playing in the FUTURES Tour Qualifying Tournament from Nov. 4-7.
