DURHAM, N.C. - Duke fifth-year senior attackman Matt Danowski underwent successful surgery on Tuesday to correct a lisfranc ligament injury to his right foot suffered last week. The surgery was performed at the Duke University Ambulatory Surgery Center by Dr. James Nunley.
Danowski is expected to miss at least four months of action.
“We expect Matt to have a complete recovery,” said Duke head coach John Danowski. “Obviously, he'll be out of action for a while. The healing process begins now, and we have all the confidence in the world that everything will work out for him. You hate for any student-athlete to have an injury of any kind, but we'll march forward in hopes that he'll be ready to go in the spring.”
In 2007, Danowski registered an ACC single-season record 96 total points on 44 goals and 52 assists. His point total, which led the nation, broke the 44-year old league single-season mark of 93. In becoming just the fourth player in NCAA history to produce a season with 40 or more goals and 50 or more assists, Danowski paired with teammate Zack Greer to form the second-most prolific scoring tandem in NCAA history with a combined 190 points, falling just three points shy of the record of 193 set by Mike French and Eamon McEneaney of Cornell in 1975.
A native of Farmingdale, N.Y., and 2007 graduate of Duke, Danowski was the consensus national player of the year honoree in 2007 after receiving the Tewaaraton Trophy as well as the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's (USILA) Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award. In addition, he earned USILA Attackman of the Year, USILA First Team All-America, ACC Player of the Year, ACC Tournament MVP, All-ACC, ACC All-Tournament Team and NCAA All-Tournament Team accolades.
In 61 careeer games at Duke, Danowski has amassed 256 total points on 129 goals and 127 assists.
Over the past four seasons, Danowski has helped the Blue Devils to a 45-16 overall record with two ACC regular season championships (2005 & 2007), one ACC Tournament crown (2007) and two appearances in the NCAA championship game (2005 & 2007). Duke's 40 victories and .833 winning percentage over the past two seasons are the most of any school in the nation.
