DURHAM, N.C. - Former Duke All-Americas Kevin Cassese and Matt Zash helped the Philadelphia Barrage become the first team in Major League Lacrosse history to win back-to-back championships with a 16-13 victory over the Los Angeles Riptide in the MLL Championship Game at PAETEC Park on Sunday in Rochester, N.Y.
Cassese, who served as an assistant coach at Duke from 2005-07 before accepting the head coaching position at Lehigh University in July, helped the Barrage advance into Sunday's championship by recording one goal and one assist in a 13-12 overtime semifinal victory versus Denver on Saturday. Cassese's one-point goal pulled the trailing Barrage even with the Outlaws with 59 seconds remaining in regulation.
Zash was sidelined for the championship game with a wrist injury suffered in Saturday's semifinal. He was credited with two goals, one assist and 55 ground balls in regular season action.
Matt Ogelsby, a Duke All-America selection in 1995, tallied one assist for Los Angeles in the title tilt, after recording two goals, one assist and eight ground balls during the regular season for the Riptide.
