CONWAY, S.C. - The Duke men's soccer team took to the field just four days after they started practice, heading south to play Coastal Carolina on Sunday night in an exhibition contest. The Chanticleers won the match, 2-1.
The Blue Devils started off strong, scoring a goal only 2:35 into play as senior Paul Dudley finished a Spencer Wadsworth corner kick to put Duke up, 2-1. Coastal Carolina answered less than a minute later, as sophomore Oron Levy scored an unassisted goal off of a deflection.
The score remained 1-1 until the 59th minute, when the Chanticleers tallied a goal in the box by freshmen Kelly Porter off a cross by senior Robert Holstein. That would prove to be the difference in the match.
19 Blue Devils saw action on the evening, including debuts for freshmen Doug Ferner, Nick Sih, Christian Ibeagha and Cole Grossman, and transfer Joshua Medcalf. Senior Justin Papadakis played 75 minutes in goal, recording two saves, and junior Brendan Fitzgerald played the remaining 15 minutes between the pipes.
Duke out-shot Coastal Carolina, 10-8, and held the advantage in corner kicks, 5-0.
Duke will practice Monday through Friday this week before traveling to Storrs, Conn., for their second and final exhibition contest with Connecticut at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The Blue Devils kickoff the 2007 regular season on Fri., Aug. 31, against Delaware at 7 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium.
