KENNEBUNK, Maine ? Duke baseball coaching legend “Colby” Jack Coombs will be the focus of a new Brick Store Museum exhibition titled “Kennebunk's Big Leaguers: The Baseball Legacies of Colby Jack and Bobby Coombs.”
Coombs served as the head coach of the Duke baseball program from 1929 to 1952 and led the team to a 381-171-3 overall record. The namesake of Duke's baseball field, Coombs led the Blue Devils to three NCAA District titles and a third-place finish in the 1951 College World Series. During his 24-year tenure as head coach, Coombs garnered seven state championships and five Southern Conference titles.
The exhibition features newspaper clippings, rare images and memorabilia used to piece together the lives of Coombs and his nephew Bobby. Visitors tour the exhibit by “rounding the bases” to learn about the duo's college, major league and coaching careers. The exhibition was made possible by the assistance of surviving family members and original research by John Tierney.
“Opening Day” for the exhibition was on July 8, 2007 and featured a reception with peanuts and cracker jack. The showcase will remain open through December 29, 2007.
Prior to his career at Duke, Coombs (1882-1957) played 14 seasons of professional baseball with three different organizations, including the Philadelphia Athletics, Brooklyn Robins and Detroit Tigers. Used primarily as a pitcher, Coombs finished his career with a 158-110 record and an ERA of 2.78. He claimed three wins in the 1910 World Series to seal the championship for Philadelphia.
