Coach John Danowski
Opening Statement:
“We congratulate Johns Hopkins University for winning the national championship. They're extremely well-coached and they played a terrific game. Falling behind 10-4 and our inability to win face-offs and not have a lot of ball possession allowed Hopkins to get a lead. Once they had the lead I felt we were pressing often in the second quarter. We seemed to relax a little bit towards the middle of the second quarter, and I thought in the second half we came out and were real relaxed, and then it was a game. But like in life, sometimes the ball hits the pipe and bounces the other way, and sometimes it doesn't. As I told our guys, ?If this is the worst thing that's going to happen in your life, you've lived a good life.' I'm extremely proud of them. As you can imagine, it was extremely emotional afterwards. It's been a hell of a ride, and I thank the students at Duke University for giving me the opportunity to be here.”
Senior Attackman Matt Danowski
On the end of an emotional season:
“It's just an extreme feeling of emptiness. To come up one goal short, personally for me, it's not good enough. It's a weird feeling to know that you got this far and couldn't get it done, but hats off to Johns Hopkins. They got it done.”
Senior Midfielder Ed Douglas
On the end of an emotional season:
“I think the hardest part was realizing we wouldn't be able to spend another practice with the 40 other guys on the team. You know it's your last game when it's the championship. The opportunity was there for us to win late in the game, and Hopkins made the plays, and we unfortunately came up short. It's just a real sense of emptiness right at the end there. Coach [John Danowski] reminded us what a great season it was and that we should be proud of ourselves, but certainly it hurts.”
