CORAL GABLES, Fla. ? Trailing 4-1 entering the bottom of the third, the Miami Hurricanes hung nine runs on the board in the inning on their way to a 14-5 win over Duke on Saturday afternoon at Mark Light Field. The Blue Devils finish their season 29-25 overall and 8-22 in the ACC while the Hurricanes improve to 35-20 and 17-13, respectively.
Centerfielder Blake Tekotte drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the third. Following a single by third baseman Roger Tomas, first baseman Yonder Alonzo turned on the first pitch he saw and sent a three-run jack over the right field wall to tie the game at 4-4. Rightfielder Dennis Raben drew a walk and second baseman Jemile Weeks singled to right after Alonzo's home run. Leftfielder Mark Sobolewski then bunted for a sacrifice but the throw to first sailed out of play, allowing Raben to score and Sobolewski and Weeks to advance to second and third. Designated hitter Gus Menendez then grounded out to short to bring in Weeks. Catcher Richard O'Brien followed with an RBI-double to right center to score Sobolewski. After shortstop Ryan Jackson flew out to center and Tekotte drew a walk, Tomas laced an RBI-single to left to score O'Brien. Alonzo then doubled to right to drive in Tekotte and Tomas, giving the Hurricanes a 10-4 lead.
Duke jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Rightfielder Jonathan Anderson and first baseman Nate Freiman had back-to-back one-out singles to get the Blue Devils going in the inning. Third baseman Brett Bartles then doubled down the right field line to drive in Anderson. Catcher Matt Williams followed with a two-run single up the middle to score Freiman and Bartles. Two batters later, shortstop Gabriel Saade lined an RBI-single to right center to bring in Williams.
Miami scored in the bottom half of the first to make it a 4-1 ballgame. Tekotte doubled down the left field line to begin the frame. Two batters later, Alonzo doubled into the right field corner to drive in Tekotte.
O'Brien and pinch hitter Dave DiNatale both added an RBI in the bottom of the fourth to extend Miami's lead to 12-4.
The Blue Devils scored in the top of the fifth to cut Miami's lead to 12-5. Freiman sent a one-out double to left center and Bartles followed with a single off Miami starter Enrique Garcia to move Freiman to third. Williams then reached on an error that allowed Freiman to trot home.
Tomas reached on an infield single to begin the bottom of the fifth before advancing to third on a single to right by Alonzo. Raben then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Tomas and give the Canes a 13-5 lead.
DiNatale sent a one-out solo shot to left in the bottom of the sixth to give Miami a 14-5 lead. The Hurricanes later loaded the bases but freshman reliever Will Currier got Weeks to ground out to end the inning.
Anderson led the Blue Devils at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored in his final collegiate game. Freiman finished 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, Bartles was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored and Saade went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Williams finished 1-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, leftfielder Tim Sherlock went 1-for-4 and centerfielder Jimmy Gallagher was 1-for-5.
