
Florida State Edges Duke, 4-2, In ACC Championship Quarterfinals

CARY, N.C. - The 13th-ranked and No. 3-seeded Duke men's tennis team fell to 19th-ranked and sixth-seeded Florida State by a narrow 4-2 margin on Friday in the ACC Championship quarterfinals, held at Cary Tennis Park. Duke falls to 15-9 overall on the year, while Florida State improves to 27-8.
The Seminoles took the doubles point as the 34th-ranked tandem of Jonathas Sucupira and Sam Chang defeated the 10th-ranked Blue Devil duo of senior Joey Atas and junior David Goulet at the top doubles slot, 8-5, and junior Ned Samuelson and freshman Dylan Arnould fell to Ytai Abougzir and Bradley Mixon, 8-6, at No. 2.
Singles action saw Goulet tie the score at one all, as he defeated Chris Cloer, 6-3, 6-5, at the No. 5 position, but Florida State bounced back to take a 2-1 lead on Sucupira's 6-4, 6-3 victory over 105th-ranked Atas at the No. 2 spot.
Chang then defeated Arnould at the No. 4 slot, 6-4, 6-1, to increase FSU's lead to 3-1.
Junior Alex Stone posted a 7-5, 6-3 win over Mixon at No. 6 to pull Duke within one at 3-2, but 67th-ranked Abougzir's 6-4, 6-2 win over 54th-ranked Dimitrov at the top singles flight clinched the 4-2 win for the Seminoles.
Duke now awaits its seeding for the 2007 NCAA Championships, which will be announced on May 1. First and second round matches are set for May 11 and 12 at campus sites to be determined, while the NCAA Championships will take place in Athens, Ga., on May 17-28.
