Duke Cruises To 4-0 Win Over UMBC In NCAA Championship First Round Action

DURHAM, N.C. - The 14th-ranked Duke men's tennis team defeated UMBC, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Championships on Friday morning at Ambler Tennis Stadium. The Blue Devils will meet 17th-ranked Alabama on Saturday at 11 a.m. in second round action.
The Blue Devils came out strong and took the doubles point on the strength of wins at the No. 2 and 3 spots to go into singles competition with a 1-0 advantage.
The Duke duo of senior Peter Rodrigues and sophomore Kiril Dimitrov quickly cruised to an 8-1 victory at the third position, defeating Chris Meyer and Fernando Ferreira. Freshman Dylan Arnould and junior Ned Samuelson then combined for an 8-5 win over Irfan Shamasdin and David Jackson at No. 2 to clinch the point for Duke.
Singles action saw Duke come out on top in all six first sets, as the Blue Devils would go on to take three matches in straight sets for the 4-0 win over the Retrievers.
Junior David Goulet posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Fredi Voorman at the No. 5 position to give Duke its second point, and senior, 105th-ranked Joey Atas, defeated Meyer at No. 2, 6-1, 6-2, to put the Blue Devils within one tally of clinching the victory.
No. 79 Rodrigues then posted his 102nd career win with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over David Jackson at flight No. 3 to give Duke the 4-0 win.
The Blue Devils improve to 16-9 on the season, while the Retrievers end their season with an overall ledger of 15-6. Duke advances to the second round of the NCAA Championships and will square off versus Alabama, a first round 4-2 winner over No. 51 East Tennessee State.
