CARY, N.C. - The 22nd-ranked and seventh-seeded Duke women's tennis team defeated 58th-ranked and 10th-seeded Virginia Tech, 4-0, in the first round of the 2007 ACC Championships on Thursday afternoon at Cary Tennis Park.
Duke improves to 11-9 on the season, while Virginia Tech falls to 12-13, as the Blue Devils will now meet No. 2 seed and defending league tournament champion Georgia Tech (20-4, 10-1 ACC) in a quarterfinal match on Friday at 12 p.m.
The Blue Devils took the doubles point for the 11th time this season, as the 10th-ranked Duke duo of senior Daniela Bercek and sophomore Melissa Mang posted a quick 8-1 win over Jessica Brouwer and Abbey Walker at No. 1, before senior Clelia Deltour and sophomore Jessi Robinson combined for an 8-4 win over Bethan James and Chelsea Cramp at No. 3 to give Duke the initial tally.
Duke then secured three straight-set singles wins, as Robinson defeated Brouwer, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 6 spot, Deltour posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over James at No. 5 and Plotkin got past Walker, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 3 to give the Blue Devils the 4-0 victory.
“We really need a good win today after a tough week last week,” said Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth. “We just needed to come out and play tennis today and get a good, solid win, and we did that.”
Today's match between Duke and Virginia Tech marked the first ever meeting in tournament play between the two schools. The Blue Devils now hold an 12-0 advantage in the all-time series with the Hokies, including a 1-0 mark in ACC Tournament competition, as Duke remains perfect at 5-0 in first round matches all-time.
On Friday, the Blue Devils will look to avenge a tight 4-3 regular season loss to Georgia Tech, as they take on the fifth-ranked Yellow Jackets. Duke is 6-0 versus Georgia Tech in ACC Tournament competition and leads the all-time series with the Yellow Jackets, 29-1.
