DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke University men's golf team fired a seven-over 291 in the second round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate on Monday to move into sole possession of eighth place with a two round score of 579 (+11). Senior Jake Grodzinsky paced the Blue Devils, ranked 20th in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf Division I Coaches' Poll, with a one-under 70.
Central Florida shot a four-over 288 in the second round to hold a four stroke lead over Wake Forest with a two round total of 558 (-10). Florida State and Baylor are tied for third at 583 (-5). Coastal Carolina is fifth with a seven-over 575, while LSU (+8, 576) and Augusta State (+10, 578) are sixth and seventh respectively. Following Duke (+11, 579) in the eighth spot are North Carolina (+12, 580) and South Carolina (+15, 583).
Grodzinsky opened second round action with eight straight pars before bogeying two of his next three holes. After a par on No. 12, the Cornville, Ariz., native carded his first birdie of the day on the par 5 13th holes. Following pars on No. 14 and No. 15, Grodzinsky birdied the par 4 16th and par 3 17th holes to get to one under. He capped off the round with his 13th par of the day on No. 18, giving him a two-round score of 143 (73-70). Grodzinsky will enter Tuesday's final round of play tied for 21st overall.
Freshman Jeff Edelman continued his solid play with an even-par 71 on Monday. The Southlake, Texas, native opened the second round with a birdies before bogeying three of the next five holes. He closed the front nine with a birdie and carded back-to-back birdies on No. 10 and No. 11 to get to one-under. Edelman suffered bogeys on No. 12, No. 14 and No. 15, but birdies on the par 5 13th and par 4 16th helped him closed the day at even par. He is also tied for 21st overall with a one-over 143 through two rounds.
Clark Klaasen carded seven pars and a pair of bogeys on the front nine en route to a two-over 38 at the turn. He opened the back nine with three straight pars before going double-bogey, bogey to slip to five-over through 14 holes. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native recovered to finish birdie, birdie, par, par to get back to three-over (74). Through two rounds, Klaasen is tied for 42nd at six-over (148).
Freshman Adam Long shot a five-over 76 to slip into a tie for 40th with a five-over 147. Long recorded 14 pars on Monday but also had three bogeys and one double-bogey. Junior Michael Schachner started strong with a birdie and four straight pars to open his round, before going six-over on the final four holes of the front nine. He also birdied No. 13 but bogeys on No. 15 and No. 18 dropped him to a six-over 77 on the day.
The Blue Devils open up final round play on Tuesday at 8 a.m. on the front side of the Bulls Bay Golf Club (par-71, 7.261). Duke will be paired with North Carolina and Augusta State in the final round of action.
