No. 1 Duke Falls To Loyola, 8-7

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Despite a fourth quarter rally and three goals from Ned Crotty, top-ranked Duke dropped an 8-7 loss to Loyola on Saturday night in front of 5,132 fans in San Diego, Calif. The game was the nightcap of The First 4 event that included Yale's win over Air Force.

The Blue Devils fall to 4-1 on the year while Loyola improves to 2-2.

Trailing 5-2 heading into the final period, Duke pulled within 5-3 when Gibbs Fogarty scored at the 12:58 mark. Loyola answered with a goal by Patrick Kennedy just 12 seconds later to push the margin back to three.

Later in the quarter, Crotty scored three goals as the Blue Devils used a 4-0 run over a 4:07 span to take the lead, 7-6. Crotty tallied at the 8:21 and 6:55 marks before Matt Danowski's goal from Michael Ward with 5:24 on the clock tied the contest. Crotty's third goal of the night came with 4:14 remaining and pushed Duke into the lead for the first time in the game.

The Greyhounds responded with a goal by Andrew Spack at the 1:13 mark, and Greg Leonard provided the game-winner with just 38 seconds left. Danowski's shot with just four seconds remaining was saved by Loyola goalkeeper Alex Peaty, preserving the win for the Greyhounds.

Loyola darted to a 4-1 lead after one period and led 5-1 at intermission. Duke's Nick O'Hara scored the only goal of the third quarter.

Dan Kallaugher dominated the X for the first three quarters as Loyola secured eight-of-10 draws. Led by Dan Oppedisano, the Blue Devils won seven-of-nine draws in the final 15 minutes to creep back into the game. Oppedisano finished the night with seven wins in 12 attempts.

For Duke, goalkeeper Dan Loftus was credited with eight saves while Peaty posted 12 saves. O'Hara scooped up a team-high 10 ground balls for the Blue Devils.

Duke travels to face North Carolina next Saturday at 12 noon.
