Rowbury Wins First Duke Women's NCAA Track And Field Championship

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Duke's women finished up the weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark. Due to senior Shannon Rowbury's performances in the mile and the 3000m, the Blue Devils placed 12th at the meet with a total of 18 points. That finish placed Duke ahead of all ACC teams represented in Fayetteville. The Blue Devils had four All-America performers throughout the weekend in five different events, which set a school record for Duke's women's team in one season.

Rowbury began the evening by winning the mile in the finals of that event. Her time of 4:42.17 won the race by more than a second and earned Rowbury instant All-America status. It was the first-ever NCAA women's track and field title for the Blue Devils, and the victory earned Duke 10 points toward the team total. Rowbury holds the Duke record in the mile with her 4:34.94 mark on Feb. 9 at the Tyson Invitational, which was also in Fayetteville.

In the 3000 meters, Rowbury was narrowly defeated by Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech despite running a Duke record 9:02.73. Rowbury shattered her personal best by almost 14 seconds and tallied another eight points towards Duke's team total. For the second time on the evening, Rowbury earned All-America accolades. Senior Elizabeth Wort also ran in the 3000m, running a 9:21.77 and placing 10th. That earned her All-America status as well.
