CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman Shannon Beall placed seventh in the 100 butterfly finals on day three of the ACC Championships on Friday evening to help lift the Duke women's swimming team into ninth place at the end of day three action.
Beall qualified for finals in preliminary action earlier in the day, finishing the 100 fly in 56 seconds even, and went on to beat that time in the finals, as she touched in 55.76 seconds to set a Duke season-best, along with a personal-best.
Beall also helped the Duke 400 medley relay team to a seventh-place finish, as junior Danielle Spearman, senior Jackie Rodriguez, sophomore Emily Kelly and she touched in a Duke season-best 3:49.20. Spearman recorded a leadoff split of 56.70 seconds for a team season-best 100 backstroke mark, until she later broke her own mark in the 100 back consolation finals, touching in 56.47 seconds. Both times were a personal-best for the junior.
Sophomore Erin Frizzell competed in the 100 back bonus finals, as she touched in 59.20 seconds.
Rodriguez was in action in the 400 individual medley consolation finals, and came in in 4:26.76 - a Duke season-best - while senior Michelle Aristeo (4:29.14) and freshman Elizabeth Bellew (4:34.78) were both in 400 IM bonus final action.
Rodriguez also posted a Duke season-best time in the 100 breaststroke consolation finals, touching in 1:04.31. Freshman Meredith Bannon was also in action, finishing in 1:06.13, while junior Amy Brown touched in 1:06.93 in the bonus finals.
On the diving board, freshman Julie Brummond missed qualifying for finals by two spots, nothing a score of 268.15 in the 3-meter prelims.
Duke sits in ninth place with 110 points heading into the final day of the 2007 ACC Championships. Host North Carolina is in first place with 497 points, while Florida State (445) and Virginia (333.5) round out the top three.
The 2007 ACC Women's Swimming Championships will continue through Saturday, Feb. 17, with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. each day and finals set to begin at 7 p.m. each evening. The 2007 Platform Diving Championships will be held on Saturday, Feb. 17, at Duke's Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion at 10 a.m.
The 2007 ACC Men's Swimming Championships will be held Feb. 21-24 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
