DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke women's swimming team will begin action at the 2007 ACC Championships on Wednesday evening at the University of North Carolina's Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, N.C. Action will start with the 800 freestyle and 200 medley relay finals at 7 p.m.
The Duke women are coming off a 174-126 loss to Clemson on Feb. 3. Senior Jackie Rodriguez had a stellar day versus the Tigers, taking first place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.39, and also placing first in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.55).
Freshman Meredith Bannon took second in the 100 breaststroke, touching in 1:06.87, for a Blue Devil one-two punch. Duke also took first and second places in the 200 butterfly, as freshman Shannon Beall took first in 2:05.32 and classmate Elizabeth Bellew took second in 2:07.58. Beall was a double-event winner, also placing first in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 57.39.
Junior Danielle Spearman recorded a victory, touching first in the 200 backstroke (2:05.86). On the diving board, freshman Julie Brummond placed first on the 1-meter board with a score of 265.05.
The Duke women finished the regular season with an overall record of 5-4 (1-4 ACC).
“It's been an exciting season thus far and we are feeling good about our potential this coming week,” said head coach Dan Colella. “They have worked hard all season and I am confident that they will see great results for all their hours logged in the pool this year. We are going to have fun and race hard.”
The 2006 ACC Championships saw the Duke women place 10th and tally 160 points, as senior Katie Ness received All-ACC honors for her third-place finish in the 200 butterfly event. Florida State claimed its first ever swimming and diving championship with 596.5 points in 2006.
The 2007 ACC Women's Swimming Championships will continue through Saturday, Feb. 17, with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. each day and finals set to begin at 7 p.m. each evening. The 2007 Platform Diving Championships will be held on Saturday, Feb. 17, at Duke's own Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion at 10 a.m.
The 2007 ACC Men's Swimming Championships will be held Feb. 21-24 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
