FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Duke's Indoor Track and Field team completed a weekend of stellar performances on Saturday at the Tyson Invitational. All but one Blue Devil performer qualified for the postseason in the 12 events that Duke competitors were entered in during the two-day meet.
Women's: Senior Debra Vento competed in the high jump on Saturday afternoon and hit a season best height of 5'-10.0.” That mark not only qualifies Vento for the ECAC championships, but is an NCAA provisional qualifying height as well. Vento placed fifth at the Tyson Invitational in the event.
Senior Elizabeth Wort, sophomore Maddie McKeever and senior Sally Meyerhoff finished first, third, and sixth, respectively, in the women's 3000 meters on Saturday. All three women's times qualified them for the ECAC's and the NCAA provisional time. Wort ran the 3000 in a time of 9:15.52, which placed her second on Duke's all-time indoor records list. McKeever went the distance in 9:22.49 and Meyerhoff in a time of 9:29.00.
In the distance medley relay, the Blue Devil team of freshman Kate VanBuskirk, sophomore Michelle Seibert, sophomore Libby Jenke and senior Shannon Rowbury finished second in Fayetteville with a time of 11:15.20. That mark qualified the team for the ECAC's and the NCAA provisional time, and ranks second on Duke's all-time indoor records list for the DMR.
Men's: Junior Chris Spooner ran the 3000 meters at the Tyson Invitational in 8:22.66, and finished second at the meet with that time. Spooner became the first Blue Devil to qualify for the IC4A championships this season in the men's indoor 3000.
Duke's 4x400 relay team set a school record with their time of 3:14.17. Sophomore Nick Trombold, junior Peter Lewellen, junior Matt Danforth and senior Daniel King placed seventh at the meet with that time. They became the second Duke team to qualify for the IC4A's in the 4x400 relay. Danforth and King were a part of the first team to do so on Jan. 13 at the Virginia Tech Opener.
A Look Ahead: Duke will compete next weekend in the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. The Blue Devils will not host a meet until the outdoor season, when there will be two in Durham. The Duke Invitational is Apr. 6-7 and the Duke Twilight is May 6, and both will be held at Wallace Wade Stadium.
