DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke men's lacrosse team is ranked No. 2 in the Face-Off Yearbook preseason top 25 and eight Blue Devils received preseason All-America honors, as was released by Inside Lacrosse.
Defending national champion Johns Hopkins took the top spot in the preseason poll, followed by the Blue Devils at No. 2 and ACC rival Virginia at No. 3. Rounding out the top five are Georgetown and North Carolina with the fourth and final ACC foe, Maryland, coming in at No. 6.
The Blue Devils boast eight preseason All-America selections, including first team picks in the senior foursome of Matt Danowski, Zack Greer, Nick O'Hara and Tony McDevitt. Senior Michael Ward received second team accolades while classmate Dan Loftus was named to the third team and senior Brad Ross and junior Ned Crotty were tabbed as honorable mention honorees.
Duke returns eight starters and 32 letterwinners from a team that concluded the 2007 season with a 17-3 overall ledger, matching the NCAA record for wins in a season set previously by the 2005 Duke, 2006 Hofstra and 2006 Virginia squads. Duke captured the ACC regular season and tournament championships and advanced to the national title game for the second time in three seasons.
The Blue Devils, who were picked by IL to finish atop the ACC in 2008, will begin the new campaign on Feb. 16 as they play host to Bucknell at 1 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium.
