DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke swimming and diving teams will host nationally ranked North Carolina on Saturday at Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion at 11 a.m., as the Duke women look to add another win to their perfect? 5-0 (2-0 ACC) record and the Duke men look to build upon their 1-2 (0-2 ACC) season ledger.
Carlyle Cup: The winners of Saturday's meet will receive one point each (one for men and one for women) towards their school's Carlyle Cup tally. The Carlyle Cup, an annual all-sports competition between Duke and North Carolina, is sponsored by Carlyle and Company. UNC leads the current Carlyle Cup chase, 4.0-1.5.
A Look At The Tar Heels: In its second dual meet of the season, the No. 11 North Carolina women's swimming and diving team and the No. 16 North Carolina men's swimming and diving squad fell to Minnesota at the Minnesota Aquatics Center. The No. 9 Golden Gopher women beat the Heels, 208.5-165, while the No. 10 Minnesota men won, 218-146.
Both squads hold an overall record of 0-1 and will face their first ACC competitors of the season in Saturday's meet with Duke.
Last Time Out: The Duke women's swimming and diving squad defeated Maryland, 155-139, while the Blue Devil men dropped a close decision to the Terrapins, 149-145, on Nov. 3 at the Eppley Recreation Center in College Park, Md.
Freshman Ashley Twichell took first place in three events on the day, touching first in the 1000 free, 200 free and 500 free events. Her NCAA “B” standard time of 1:49.68 for the 200 free set a new school record, her fourth school record set in three meets, including besting her own school record in the 1000 free one meet after shattering the previous three-year-old mark. Twichell also anchored the second-place 400 freestyle relay squad, as the all-freshman foursome of Emily Lang, Kirstie Jeffrey, Katie Magee and she touched in 3:30.78.?
Freshman Jessica Perry (100 breast) and sophomores Meredith Bannon (200 breast) and Shannon Beall (100 fly) were event winners, while sophomore Julie Brummond was a double-winner, taking top honors on both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards. Perry also recorded a second-place finish in the 200 breast, while Bannon took runner-up honors in the 100 breast.
On the men's side, the outcome came down to the final event, the 400 free relay, as a Terrapin foursome finished before Duke's team of sophomores Sean Smith and David Carlson and freshmen Spencer Booth and Andy Osterland to take the win.
Recording victories for the Blue Devils were Osterland (200 free), Booth (200 back), sophomores Eric Ness (200 fly) and Eric Winnard (1-meter diving) and junior Nick Campisano (3-meter diving). Sophomore Andrew Clark (1000 free, 500 free) notched two wins on the day.
A Look Ahead: Duke will close out the first half of the season next weekend, as the Blue Devils travel to Atlanta, Ga., for the Georgia Tech Invitational. The Invitational will run from Nov. 16-18.
