CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. --- The Duke men's and women's cross country teams each took sixth place at the ACC Championships in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday morning. The men had a total of 156 points and the women picked up 127 points. The meet was held at Panorama Farms and hosted by the University of Virginia.
Freshman Bo Waggoner once again led the way for the Duke men. The native of Maumee, Ohio, finished 14th with a time of 24:30.4 on the eight-kilometer course. It was his third meet of the season where he finished as the top Blue Devil. Another freshman, Joshua Lund, placed 30th with a clocking of 25:07.2. He was followed for Duke by the McDermott brothers: junior Kevin was 35th at the meet in a time of 25:17.4 and only .5 seconds and one place behind him was freshman Ryan.
For the women, it was junior Maddie McKeever as the top finisher for Duke on the 6k trail. She placed 11th overall with a time of 21:29.1. In all three meets she has competed in this fall, McKeever has been the Blue Devils' top harrier. Just behind McKeever in 12th place was sophomore captain Kate Van Buskirk with a 21:32.6 clocking. Sophomore Emily Sherrard took 27th place with a time of 22:15.3. Rounding out Duke's top four was freshman Emily Schwitzer, who placed 34th in 22:30.4. The Blue Devils had the highest placing sixth and seventh-place finishers of all 12 ACC teams, but were hurt in their score by not having anyone finish in the top 10.
With their top-14 finishes, Waggoner, McKeever and Van Buskirk each qualified for All-ACC honors for the season.
Head men's coach Norm Ogilvie's record on the season is now 36-19. Head women's coach Kevin Jermyn has compiled a mark of 38-10.
North Carolina now leads 4.0-1.5 over Duke in this year's Carlyle Cup, which is a year-long all-sports competition between the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels, sponsored by Carlyle & Co. of Greensboro, N.C. Two points were up for grabs on Saturday in cross country--- one for the men and one for the women. Duke's men beat out UNC (10th place) while the Blue Devil women were defeated by Tar Heels (fourth place). In seven seasons, the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels have won three Carlyle Cups apiece and tied once, in 2006-07.
The men's and women's squads will next compete when they send “B” teams to Cary, N.C., on Saturday, Nov. 3, to take on N.C. State.
