DURHAM, N.C. - The ninth-ranked Duke men's soccer team defeated No. 17 South Florida, 1-0, to win the Duke/adidas Classic Championship on Sunday night at Koskinen Stadium.
Michael Videira was named Tournament MVP after helping the Blue Devils to a victory over the Bulls. His shot was saved by a South Florida defender but the rebound came to
Mike Grella, who put it into the back of the net for his team-high fourth goal of the season at the 25:50 mark of the first half. The goal was already the third game-winning goal in four games for Grella as he matches his freshman total from last year. Grella, who finished with two goals and an assist in the two games this weekend, was also named to the All-Tournament team along with fellow Duke players
Spencer Wadsworth and
Pavelid Castaneda.
Also named to the All-Tournament team were Dane Brenner, Kareem Smith and Simon Schoendorf of South Florida, El Hadj Cisse and Alan Sanchez of N.C. State and Sal Caccavale and Larry Mark of American.
Duke's 1-0 victory over South Florida was its first shutout of the season. The Blue Devils dominated with an 18-3 advantage in total shots. They did not allow a single shot by the Bulls in the second half. Brenner helped keep South Florida in the game with three saves.
In the first game of the day, N.C. State scored two straight goals to rally from a 2-1 deficit for a 3-2 victory. Jorge Mora sent a corner kick to El Hadj Cisse in the 18th minute for the Wolfpack's first goal of the game. American came back with consecutive goals by Lucas Dowiak and Tomer Konowiecki to take the lead. However, Alan Sanchez scored two goals in the final 30 minutes to give N.C. State the victory.
The Blue Devils will open up ACC play next weekend when they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to take on Wake Forest at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
