BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech, ranked 14th in the latest Associated Press national poll, used 316 passing yards and a punt return for a touchdown to defeat visiting Duke, 36-0, as 66,223 fans looked on at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Va.
The Blue Devils fall to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the ACC. Virginia Tech improves to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Virginia Tech took the opening kickoff and drove 65 yards on four plays to claim a 6-0 lead on Branden Ore's one-yard touchdown run. Hokie quarterback Sean Glennon hooked up with receiver David Clowney for a 60-yard completion on the first snap from scrimmage. Duke's Casey Camero blocked the PAT attempt, marking the fourth blocked kick of his career.
The Hokies extended their lead to 13-0 when Eddie Royal returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown with 39 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Brandon Pace booted a 42-yard field goal at the 11:02 mark of the second quarter, capping a seven play, 37-yard drive to give Virginia Tech a 16-0 lead.
Glennon's 17-yard scoring strike to tight end Sam Wheeler pushed the lead to 23-0 with just under three minutes before halftime.
At the 7:17 mark of the third quarter, Glennon hooked up with receiver Josh Morgan on a 25-yard touchdown pass for a 30-0 Tech lead. The scoring drive was set up by Royal's 20-yard punt return that gave the Hokies possession at the Duke 22 yard line. On their ensuing possession, the Blue Devils moved into scoring position when Marcus Jones tossed a 38-yard pass to Eron Riley to the Hokie 19 yard line. The Virginia Tech defense then held, and Jones was limited to no gain on fourth down, turning the ball over.
Virginia Tech used a 15 play, 84-yard drive to claim a 36-0 lead when Kenny Lewis found the end zone from two yards out with just under 11 minutes left in the final quarter.
Jones finished with six completions in eight attempts for 71 yards. Senior cornerback John Talley logged his first interception of the year and the 12th of his career while sophomore linebacker Michael Tauiliili had a team-high 11 tackles. Senior linebacker Jeramy Edwards and junior safety Chris Davis each secured seven total stops.
For the Hokies, Ore rushed for a team-best 64 yards on 15 attempts while Glennon was 15-of-25 through the air for 301 yards and two touchdowns.
Duke is idle next Saturday before entertaining Virginia for the 2006 edition of Homecoming on Saturday, September 30. The kickoff time for Duke-Virginia will be announced on Monday.
