OAK RIDGE, Tenn. ? The Duke rowing team captured 185 points to finish 11th at the 2006 Aramark Central/South Region Sprints over the weekend at Melton Hill Lake. Ohio State took the overall title for the second time in school history with 366 points. Wisconsin placed second with 361 points, while Notre Dame (336), Michigan (317) and Michigan State (312) rounded out the top five.
Duke took fifth place in the South Region standings behind Tennessee, Virginia, Louisville and Central Florida.
The Aramark Sprints featured 21 teams, including eight top-20 crews in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing poll. No. 4 Ohio State, No. 6 Michigan, No. 9 Minnesota, No. 10 Notre Dame, No. 14 Michigan State, No. 15 Virginia, No. 19 Central Florida and No. 20 Wisconsin all competed at the two-day regatta.
On Saturday morning, Duke's open four crew of coxswain Jane Chong, Tina Kariya, Nicole Weathers, Anna Hinshaw and Lauren Powell finished fourth in heat three with a time of 8:15.40 to advance to the afternoon semi-finals. The crew then placed sixth with a time of 8:25.57 to advance to Sunday's B Final. In the B Final, the Blue Devils picked up two points with a sixth-place finish with a time of 8:19.71.
The varsity four crew of coxswain Samantha Prouty, Meghan O'Toole, Sara Couch, Meredith Metcalf and Mary Lilley placed fifth in their opening heat with a time of 8:08.20 to advance to Sunday's C Final. The Blue Devil crew then finished fourth with a time of 8:01.83 to record nine points.
In heat three of the second varsity eight race, the Duke crew of coxswain Katie Tobin, Iraina Miles, Katrina Weschler, Michelle Lancto, Kate Kearney, Alison Sagar, Jacki Burmeister, Laura Dopson and Liz Martin advanced to the A/B semi-finals with a third-place finish (7:12.00). The Blue Devils would then place sixth with a time of 7:23.45 to advance to Sunday's B Final. In the B Final, Duke racked up 66 points, finishing fourth with a time of 6:53.68.
The varsity eight crew of coxswain Sarah Shapiro, Tonia Boock, Lia Hart, Virginia Kane, Alissa Van Arnam, Emily Herrington, Caroline Wray, Krista Harryman and Emma Darling opened the weekend with a third-place finish (6:59.60) in heat two to advance to the A/B semi-finals. The Blue Devils then took sixth with a time of 6:52.65 to advance to Sunday's B Final. Duke earned 108 points in the B Final, finishing fourth with a time of 6:40.64.
