DURHAM, N.C. ? Second baseman David Adams broke a 3-3 tie with a three-run double in the top of the fifth as No. 18 Virginia defeated the Duke Blue Devils, 7-3, on Saturday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field. The Blue Devils fall to 11-25 overall and 4-10 in the ACC while the Cavaliers improve to 26-9 overall and 7-7 in league play.
With the score knotted at 3-3 entering the top of the fifth, center fielder Tim Henry singled to right field before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Greg Miclat. After right fielder Brandon Marsh drew a walk, first baseman Sean Doolittle singled to center to load the bases. Adams then laced a bases-clearing double to center to give the Cavaliers a 6-3 lead.
Virginia scored three unearned runs in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead. After Adams had a bunt single, left fielder Brandon Guyer reached on a fielding error by Duke third baseman Kyle Kreick. Third baseman Jeremy Farrell then reached on another Duke fielding error to load the bases. After the Blue Devils got two consecutive outs, Henry roped a two-run single up the middle to score Guyer and Farrell. Miclat then capped the inning with an RBI-double down the right field line, scoring catcher Beau Seabury.
Duke would tie the game at 3-3 by scoring one run in each of the second, third and fourth innings. In the bottom of the second, second baseman Javier Socorro doubled to right center to begin the inning. Socorro then advanced to third on a groundout by first baseman Jonathan Nicolla before scoring on a groundout by catcher Matt Williams.
In the bottom of the third, right fielder Adam Murray singled up the middle before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kreick. Center fielder Jimmy Gallagher followed with an RBI-double down the left field line to make it a one-run ballgame.
The Blue Devils then tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Nicolla led off with a single to right which was followed by another single to right by Williams. Two batters later, Murray lined a two-out RBI-single to center to score Nicolla.
Henry added an RBI-sacrifice fly to left to extend Virginia's lead to 7-3 in the top of the sixth.
Virginia starter Jacob Thompson improved to 6-1 on the season, holding the Blue Devils to three runs on seven hits in 8.0 innings of work. Reliever Michael Schwimer closed out the ninth with three strikeouts to end the game.
Duke starter Jonathan Anderson fell to 2-4 after allowing six runs on six hits in 5.0 innings pitched.
Socorro and Murray both collected a pair of hits to lead the Blue Devils at the plate.
Adams and Henry both had two hits and three RBI for Virginia in the win.
The Blue Devils and Cavaliers will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
