Williamsburg, Va. - No. 1 Duke exploded for 13 first half goals in a 19-8 road victory against No. 17 William & Mary on Friday night.
The Blue Devils scored the first five goals of the game, including a goal by Caroline Cryer just 18 seconds into the game. William & Mary would not score until eight minutes had run off the clock as Laura Lindsey put the ball past Megan Huether on a free position shot. However, Duke would answer with another run, scoring six straight goals to take an 11-1 lead with 14:36 left in the half. After the Tribe scored their second goal with 11 minutes left, the Blue Devils closed out the half with a pair of goals. Katie Chrest capped off the scoring wiith her fifth goal of the half with just 13 seconds remaining on the clock. Kristen Waagbo also netted a hat trick for Duke with three goals in the opening stanza while Caroline Cryer added a goal and two assists. With the 13-2 advantage the Blue Devils have now outscored their opponents 128-69 in the first half this season.
William & Mary started the second half with two of the first three goals, but Duke bounced back with five straight goals. The Tribe controlled the final five minutes of the game with four straight goals to make the final score 19-8. The Blue Devils have now scored 15 or more goals in eight games this season.
Chrest led all scorers with six goals in the game. It was the third time in her career that she has scored six or more goals in a game and second against William & Mary. It was the seventh time in Duke history that a player has scored six or more goals in a game. Waagbo chipped in four goals and Cryer added two goals and two assists for four points. Rachel Sanford came away with three goals and two assists as well for Duke. The Tribe were led by Kristen Wong with three goals while Jamie Fitzgerald and Jaime Sellers each scored twice.
Duke improves to 13-1 on the season while William & Mary falls to 9-6 on the year. The Blue Devils will play their second game in three days on Sunday when they play Saint Joseph's on senior day at 12 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium. It will be Duke's final home game of the regular season and final game before the ACC Tournament.
