DURHAM, N.C. - No. 1 Duke tallied a school record 24 goals on Sunday to defeat Saint Joseph's 24-2 on senior day at Koskinen Stadium. It was Duke's final regular season home game and final game before the ACC Tournament.
Duke controlled this game from start to finish with several players contributing in the 22-goal win, which also set a school record for largest margin of victory. Five players netted hat tricks in the contest and six players finished the game with four points. Kristen Waagbo, Carolyn Davis, Caroline Cryer, Rachel Sanford and Leigh Jester all scored three times and added an assist. Katie Chrest recorded two goals and two assists as well for Duke. Chrest moved into a tie for second on the all-time assists list at Duke tying Kate Soulier with 63 in her career. Chrest also had three draw controls to reach the 150 mark for her career. She now has 151 total.
The Blue Devils did not allow a goal in the first half while scoring a season-high 15 goals before the break. On the weekend, Duke outscored their two opponents 28-2 in the opening stanza and have now outscored the opposition 143-69 before halftime this season.
The second half was much the same as the Blue Devils scored two goals in the first two minutes before the Hawks tallied their first goal of the game on a shot by Christina Colangelo with 26:40 remaining in the game. Duke then rattled off five straight and seven of the last eight to close the game. During the 5-0 run, Duke's starting goalie Megan Huether entered the game as an attacker and recorded her first collegiate goal on a free position shot at the 16:29 mark. Rachel Shack and Jessica McBride also scored their first career goals in the contest. The Blue Devils exploded for 43 goals in the two games this weekend and have scored 62 in their last three contests while giving up just 15 goals.
The ACC Tournament will be held at the M & T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md. Thursday-Sunday. The Blue Devils finish the regular season tied with Virginia and North Carolina atop the ACC standings with a 4-1 conference record.
