Newton, Mass. - No. 1 Duke played as the top-ranked team in the country for the first time since the early part of the 2002 season on Saturday and cruised to a 19-5 victory over Boston College in their final ACC contest of the regular season.
Duke started the game with a 9-0 run before Boston College cracked the scoreboard. Katie Chrest opened the scoring off a feed from Kristen Waagbo. After Leigh Jester tallied a goal on a free position shot, Chrest scored her second of the game on a pass from Kaitlin Hancock. Carolyn Davis and Michelle Menser also each tallied a pair of goals in the half while Hancock and Rachel Sanford each added a goal and an assist. The Eagles tallied their first goal of the game on a free position shot by Maura Mahoney. Duke held a 21-1 advantage in total shots in the first half.
The Blue Devils started the second half on another 9-0 run before Boston College scored four of the last five goals to make the final score 19-5. Caroline Cryer scored three second half goals and Waagbo recorded a goal and three assists to give her four assists in the game, just the seventh player to record four assists in a single contest. Jester also accomplished the feat last weekend in a win over No. 1 Northwestern. Meeghan Ford and Megan Del Monte also tallied two goals in the second half.
Lizette Blohm and Shauna Culhane each scored a pair of goals for the Eagles in the second half. Blohm also added an assist and five draw controls in the game.
The Blue Devils improved to 12-1 with the victory and 4-1 in ACC games. The Eagles drop to 7-6 on the year and 1-3 in conference play. Duke will play their next game on Friday when they travel to Williamsburg, Va. for a non-conference game against No. 16 William & Mary at 7 p.m.
