DURHAM, N.C. ? For the second straight year, Duke's Monique Currie has been selected a finalist for the State Farm Wade Trophy, which was announced on Thursday by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS). The committee released the 12 finalists with the winner being announced on April 1, 2006 at 9:45 a.m. at the NCAA Final Four in Boston, Mass.
“All 12 finalists have earned this recognition, considering the contributions they have made to their institutions both on and off the court,” said WBCA CEO, Beth Bass. “Any of these student-athletes would be an excellent representative of Lily Margaret Wade and The State Farm Wade Trophy.”
Currie, a native of Washington, D.C., has averaged 16.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 steals, while leading fourth-ranked Duke to a 26-3 overall record. The 6-0 wing is shooting a career-best 43.7 percent from three-point land and recently became the third Blue Devil to reach the 2,000 point mark.
Other finalists include Seimone Augustus (LSU), Sherill Baker (Georgia), Jessica Davenport (Ohio State), Candice Dupree (Temple), Sylvia Fowles (LSU), Tasha Humphrey (Georgia), Ivory Latta (UNC), Cappie Pondexter (Rutgers), Khara Smith (DePaul), Candice Wiggins (Stanford) and Sophia Young (Baylor).
With five more assists, Currie will become the first ACC player to ever notch over 2,000 points, 800 rebounds, 400 assists and 200 steals over a career. A two-time first team All-ACC selection, Currie scored a school-record 43 points at Miami in February and owns eight games with 20 or more points. Currie is averaging a career-low 27.4 minutes a game this season but has been more productive with her time as she is averaging a career-low turnovers per game.
The candidates were selected by a vote of committee members comprised of leading basketball coaches, journalists and basketball administrators. Members of the committee will select the winner of The State Farm Wade Trophy from the 10-member Division I Kodak All-America Team and will be announced at the Kodak/WBCA All-America Team Press Conference and The State Farm Wade Trophy Announcement during the WBCA National Convention on Saturday, April 1, 2006. This year the WBCA celebrates it's Silver Anniversary, marking 25 years of existence.
“Congratulations to all of the finalists on being the leading candidates for The State Farm Wade Trophy Player of the Year,” said Mark D. Gibson, Assistant Vice President of Advertising at State Farm. “This is a wonderful honor for such outstanding student-athletes, and we concur with Beth and look forward to seeing these individuals fulfill the rest of their basketball dreams.”
In 2004, former three-time All-America Alana Beard of Duke was selected the winner of the State Farm Wade Trophy as a senior.
Duke will await the NCAA Tournament selection show on Monday at 7:00 p.m. as the Blue Devils are awaiting an at-large bid, which will mark the 11th straight year Duke will receive an NCAA Tournament bid.
