Blacksburg, Va. - No. 2 Duke scored 14 goals in the first half en route to a 22-6 victory on the road at Virginia Tech to remain undefeated and extend their best start in school history to 8-0.
The Blue Devils controlled the game from start to finish, opening with a 6-0 run over the first 8:12 of the contest and led 9-1 with 12 minutes left in the half. They would then close out the half with five straight goals, capped off by a score from Kristen Waagbo with one second left on the clock, to take a 14-2 lead into the break. Waagbo, the reigning Inside Lacrosse National Player of the Week, finished the half with two goals and two assists. Katie Chrest led Duke in the opening stanza with four goals and an assist, scoring four of the Blue Devils' first six goals to extend her goals streak to 41 straight games with at least one goal. Rachel Sanford also chipped in two goals and an assist as Duke has now outscored their opponents 62-24 in the first half this season. The 14 goals matched a season-high, set against Duquesne on March 4 when they also led 14-2 at halftime.
Duke continued to pour it on in the second half with seven straight goals in the first 14 minutes to take a 21-2 lead. The Blue Devils scored 12 straight goals over a 23-minute span. Virginia Tech scored four unanswered goals to cut the lead to 15 but Megan Del Monte would put the finishing touches on a Duke victory with her fourth career goal to make the final score 22-6. They finished the game with a 52-13 advantage in total shots. They also won 23 of the 30 draw controls.
In all, 12 different players scored for the Blue Devils with six players scoring multiple goals. Chrest and Sanford each tied for the team lead with four goals apiece. Chrest added three assists while Sanford pitched in two. Waagbo also tallied three assists to go along with her two goals. Leigh Jester scored two goals and two assists while Kim Wathey scored just her second career goal.
The Blue Devils will return to Durham on Saturday to begin a four-game homestand with a 1 p.m. contest against Vanderbilt.
