Durham, N.C. - No. 2 Duke tied a school record with its ninth straight win, defeating Vanderbilt 15-11 on Sunday at Koskinen Stadium. Katie Chrest also became the Blue Devils' all-time leader in career points with three goals in the contest.
Chrest entered the game tied with Tricia Martin for first on the career points list at Duke with 236 points. It only took Chrest 4:55 minutes to break the record as she took a pass from Kristen Waagbo and sent it past the Commodores goalie Brooke Shinaberry to tie the game at 1-1. The Blue Devils led 3-2 before Vanderbilt scored three straight, including two by Cara Giordano to take a 5-3 lead with 14:27 remaining in the first half. However, Chrest would get Duke rolling, scoring the first of five straight goals as the Blue Devils went ahead 8-5 with seven minutes left. The Commodores cut the lead back to one but Leigh Jester scored an unassisted goal with three minutes left to send Duke into halftime with a 9-7 lead.
The Blue Devils came out strong in the second half with three unanswered goals in the first 10 minutes to key a 6-1 run. Duke led 15-8 at the 13:48 mark before Vanderbilt made a run with three straigh goals over the next six minutes. However, it was as close as they would get as the Blue Devils held them scoreless over the final 7:37 for the 15-11 victory.
Duke received three-goal efforts from four different players. Waagbo led the way with three goals and two assists to give her over 150 points in her career. She now has 93 goals and 58 assists for 151 points. Chrest finished with three goals in the game to give her 239 points for her career. She also extended her streak to 42 straight games with at least a goal. Jester and Rachel Sanford also tallied three goals with Jester adding an assist. Jester's second goal of the game gave her 100 career points. She now has 77 goals and 24 assists for 101 points. Megan Huether made 10 saves in net for the Blue Devils with six coming in the second half.
The Commodores were led by Margie Curran with two goals and three assists while Giordano also scored twice. Shinaberry finished the game with seven saves.
The Blue Devils will be back at home next Saturday when they square off against Virginia in an ACC contest at 1 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium.
