Durham, N.C. - No. 2 Duke remained undefeated with its third straight victory over a team ranked in the top-10 when they used nine first-half goals to propel them to a 10-8 victory against No. 6 Georgetown on Saturday. The Blue Devils improved to 7-0 overall and 5-0 against ranked teams with the win while the Hoyas suffered their first loss of the year, falling to 4-1.
Georgetown scored the first goal two minutes into the game but the Blue Devils went on a 7-1 run over the next 18 minutes of the half. Kristen Waagbo keyed the run for Duke with three goals and two assists as they took a 7-1 lead with 12 minutes remaining. Sara Zorzi and Lucy Poole brought the Hoyas back to within four goals with back-to-back scores but Waagbo and Carolyn Davis closed out the half, scoring 25 seconds apart to put Duke in front 9-4 with 4:22 left. The Blue Devils would take that five-goal lead into the half and held an 18-9 advantage in total shots while forcing 14 Georgetown turnovers.
The Hoyas came out strong in the second half with four unanswered goals to cut Duke's lead to 9-8. Coco Stanwick, Georgetown's leading scorer on the season, tallied a pair of goals and two of the four goals came on free position shots. Maggie Koch also came up big in goal for the Hoyas with six of her 11 saves in the second half. However, the Blue Devils tightened their defense over the final 10 minutes, holding Georgetown scoreless. Davis would stretch Duke's lead back to two goals on a free position shot with 5:25 left in regulation.
Waagbo led all scorers with four goals and two assists. She is Duke's leader in points this season with 19 goals and 13 assists. Her two assists moved her into a tie with Lauren Gallagher for fourth on Duke's career assists list. She is now three behind her teammate Katie Chrest. Davis continued her impressive freshman season with two goals, giving her 16 on the year. Her goal at the end of the first half ended up being her ACC leading fourth game-winning goal of the season. Chrest scored a goal in the first half to extend her streak to 40 straight games with at least one goal. Megan Huether finished the game with seven saves in net for the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils will take to the road on Wednesday for their third conference game of the season. Duke, 2-0 in conference play, will take on Virginia Tech (3-3, 0-1) in Blacksburg, Va. at 6 p.m.
