AUSTIN, TEXAS- Duke opened action at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational on Friday with a total of 302 and is in second place with two rounds remaining in Austin, Texas at the 6,353-Yard, Par 72 University of Texas Golf Club.
“It wasn't an easy day of golf out there today,” said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. “We have some improvement in front of us but we have some very capable golfers so I am not concerned. I am happy with the play of Jennifer and Amanda as they played good golf today.”
Opening in the lead on day one was Texas A&M with a 298 with Duke (302), TCU (303), Southern Methodist (305), Purdue (306), Tulsa (307), Oklahoma State (307) and North Carolina (310) rounding out the top-eight.
Leading the Blue Devils once again was freshman Amanda Blumenherst with an even-par, 72. Blumenherst, who is from Scottsdale, Ariz., played the first 16 holes at two-under-par before finishing off the day with bogeys on No. 17 and No. 18. The top-ranked golfer in the nation notched birdies on the par-five ninth hole and par-four 15th. She is tied for second.
Sophomore Jennifer Pandolfi had a very solid day on Friday totaling a two-over-par, 74, on her way to a tied for tied for fourth place in the individual competition. Pandolfi, a native of Navarre, Fla., collected two birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey in the morning round. After a birdie on the par-three 12th hole, Pandolfi headed to No. 14 at even par but a double-bogey on the 495-yard, par five dropped her to two-over-par. She concluded play with four straight pars.
“With the wind picking up on the back nine, it made it for some tough conditions and it was hard to keep the ball on the green with approach shots, said Brooks.”
Liz Janangelo, a senior from West Hartford, Conn., had a stellar first nine holes as she made the turn at two-over-par, but struggled on the back nine as she was four-over-par to finish with a 78. The 18-hole score of 78 is tied for her highest round of the season and is tied for 28th, individually. Anna Grzebien also registered a season-high score of 78 on Friday on her way to being tied for 28th. A product of Narragansett, R.I., Grzebien posted one birdie to seven bogies. Her previous high 18-hole score in 2005-06 was 75, which came in the season-opener.
On Friday, freshman Jennie Lee struggled with an 80 and is tied for 44th.
As a team, Duke struggled on the back nine with 15 bogies and one double-bogey to only four birdies. The Blue Devils will tee off on Saturday beginning at 10:20 a.m. (ET). Fans can follow the action live on www.GoDuke.com with livestats from golfstat.
