Farmville, Va. - No. 2 Duke started the 2006 season with a bang, defeating Longwood 19-3 on Tuesday as Kristen Waagbo tallied four goals and two assists to lead the Blue Devils to a victory.
After Longwood opened the scoring with a goal by Cathleen Strain 3:35 into the contest, Duke scored nine unanswered goals, including four by Waagbo, a preseason third team All-America choice by Inside Lacrosse. Caroline Cryer and Carolyn Davis also had strong first half performances. Cryer, a sophomore out of Centennial, Colo., scored a goal and assisted on two others while Davis scored two goals and added an assist.
The Blue Devils had a strong second half as well, outscoring the Lancers 10-2 following the break. Davis, a freshman from Skaneateles, N.Y., scored another goal to finish with three goals and four assists in her collegiate debut. Katie Chrest, the reigning Tewaaraton Trophy winner and preseason first team All-America also tallied three goals, all coming in a five-minute span early in the second half. Rachel Sanford, also a preseason first team All-America pick by Inside Lacrosse, scored two goals in the game for Duke.
The visting Blue Devils forced 16 turnovers in the game and capitalized with a 35-19 advantage in total shots. Megan Huether, a preseason second team All-America selection by Inside Lacrosse, started in net for Duke and played 46:14 minutes with just one goal allowed and six saves.
The Blue Devils will return to action on Sunday when they hit the road for a game against Richmond at 2 p.m.
