Farmville, Va. - Katie Chrest, a senior from Hampstead, Md., tied Duke's career goals record with six goals in No. 2 Duke's 18-8 victory over No. 18 Richmond on the road Sunday.
The six goals by Chrest gives her 161 career goals which ties Tricia Martin atop the all-time list. It is also the second most goals scored in a single game by a Duke player. The feat has been accomplished five previous times with Chrest scoring six times against William & Mary last season (3/4/05). Chrest holds the school record with seven goals in a game against Loyola (4/12/05).
Duke didn't waste anytime getting on the board as Michelle Menser fired a shot past Richmond's goalie Jackie Swansburg just nine seconds into the contest. The Spiders answered with a goal 46 seconds later by Allison Nuzzi to knot the score at 1-1. After each team added a pair of goals to make the score 3-3, the Blue Devils closed out the half on a 6-1 run to take a 9-4 lead into halftime. Duke controlled the first half with a 22-12 advantage in total shots. Chrest led the Blue Devils with three of her six goals in the opening stanza while Mandy Friend scored two of Richmond's four goals.
The Blue Devils continued to pour it on at the start of the second half with a 5-1 run over the first 13 minutes. Richmond's sisters combo of Ashley and Mandy Friend scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead back to seven, but Duke closed the game with a 4-1 run to make the final score 18-8.
The Blue Devils held a 42-22 advantage in total shots in the game. Rachel Sanford, a preseason Inside Lacrosse first team All-America, and Kristen Waagbo, a preseason Inside Lacrosse third team All-America, both scored three goals for Duke in the win. Caroline Cryer added a goal and three assists. Megan Del Monte, a freshman from Lutherville, Md., scored the first two goals of her collegiate career in the second half.
The Spiders were led by Mandy Friend with three goals while her sister Ashley Friend added two goals and an assist in the loss. Jackie Swansburg played all 60 minutes in goal with 13 saves.
Megan Huether, a preseason second team All-America selection by Inside Lacrosse, started in net for Duke and played 56:02 minutes with five saves in the contest. Freshman Kim Ibesi made her collegiate debut with one save in 3:58 minutes.
The Blue Devils will host No. 4 Maryland on Saturday at 12 p.m. in their home opener.
