DURHAM, N.C. - Junior midfielder Michael Videira has been selected to the 2006 NCAA Division I Men's NSCAA/adidas All-America Third Team. It was the first such honor for the Milton, Mass. native, who has seen an endless string of awards come his way this year.
Videira was at the center of Duke's success all season long. He tallied eight goals, including five game winners, and recorded seven assists. Videira was a starter in all 20 of Duke's 23 games that he was able to play in. For his efforts in Duke's championship run, he was named the ACC Tournament's Most Valuable Player, and was honored by being placed on the All-ACC First Team for the regular season. It is the third year in as many played for Videira that he was named to an All-ACC team. He was named to the Academic All-America third team for his performance on the field and in the classroom. Videira was chosen for both Top Drawer Soccer's and College Soccer News' National Teams of the Year. He was also listed among the 15 players named as a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy, and one of only two on that list who was on it for the second straight year. In addition to leading the Blue Devils to the ACC Tournament and regular season titles, he also helped top-seeded Duke reach the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament before bowing out to eventual NCAA runner-up UCLA in overtime 3-2. All of this has happened despite Videira missing three games due to injury late in the regular season.
This was the third year in a row that Duke has had a player receive All-America honors. Midfielder Blake Camp made the third team in 2004 and the first team in 2005. Duke has had 42 All-America awards garnered by 29 different players since 1939. John Rennie has coached 16 of those players to 29 awards in 28 years.
Videira becomes only the third player in Duke Men's Soccer history to be named Academic All-America and All-America in the same season. Former defender and current Blue Devil assistant coach Mike Jeffries accomplished the feat in 1983, and midfielder Jay Heaps also notched both awards in 1998.
